2.4 Reason for Absence: ICD Codes

Each absence in the dataset includes a coded reason. Reasons 1 through 21 follow the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), a standardized system used worldwide to categorize medical conditions. Reasons 22 through 28 are additional categories specific to this dataset that capture non-medical absences.

Notice that the reasons range from serious medical conditions (codes 1–21) to routine appointments and even unjustified absences (codes 22–28, shown in italics). This variation is itself analytically interesting — later in the book, we will explore whether the type of reason is associated with longer or shorter absences and whether certain reasons cluster among particular employees.
